Washington
Pinot Noir
Washington has limited sites suited for Pinot Noir—an early‑ripening, delicate grape that’s highly vulnerable to pests, sunburn, shatter, and disease. Most of the state’s major AVAs are simply too warm, so Pinot is primarily grown in cooler pockets like the Columbia Gorge and Puget Sound, where similar logistical challenges to Chelan Chardonnay exist.
When planted in the right places, Washington Pinot can be exceptional. The Gorge’s rolling hills, mountain influence, and the cooling power of the Columbia River create ideal conditions for structure, earthiness, and a more restrained New World style.
Sonoma
Sonoma represents the new world’s confident interpretation of Pinot Noir, shaped by diverse microclimates and modern craftsmanship. Vineyards along the extreme coast produce consistently bright, clean, and refreshing expressions, while the Russian River Valley leans into riper fruit and more pronounced oak to create lush, generous wines. Sites on Sonoma Mountain benefit from intense UV exposure, resulting in Pinots with greater structure and depth. Clones 667 and 777 are widely planted, and new French oak is common, with most producers opting for controlled, intentional fermentations. Sonoma Pinot Noir balances richness with energy, offering a contemporary counterpoint to old‑world tradition.
Central Otago
Remote and dramatic, Central Otago has quietly become one of the world’s most compelling Pinot Noir regions. Nestled among New Zealand’s southern alpine landscapes, the vineyards face fjords that funnel cool Antarctic winds, creating striking diurnal shifts. These conditions encourage silky tannins, vibrant cherry fruit, and a purity that has become the region’s hallmark. Winemaking styles vary, though many producers look to Burgundian techniques for inspiration—favoring elegance, balance, and a thoughtful use of oak. Central Otago Pinots feel both adventurous and refined, shaped by rugged terrain yet crafted with intention.
Burgundy
The historic home of Pinot Noir, Burgundy is where the grape first revealed its remarkable ability to express place. From the floral elegance of Volnay to the power and age‑worthy structure of the Côte d’Or, each village showcases a distinct facet of the variety. Winemaking here leans toward low‑intervention craft—often with native fermentations and oak used as a subtle accent rather than a dominant force. Burgundian Pinot Noir typically carries an old‑world charm: red cherries, earth, and a touch of the region’s signature “funk,” all woven into a refined, terroir‑driven profile.
